DICHOTOMY 27: GATHER

Congregate. Convene. Converge. Crowd. Draw. Flock. Huddle. Meet. Pick. Round Up. Show Up. Unite. A quick search for synonyms of gather yields an interesting constellation of types of verbs that align with those actions we, as architects and designers, take in our creative practices. We endeavor to craft and devise spatial conditions to foster and support meaningful interactions. We anticipate conditions of experience through an architectural language that pays close attention to how materials are assembled, views are curated, edges are defined. In our efforts to achieve flexibility across levels of programmatic and spatial adaptability, we consider all realms involving the technological, cultural, social, and experiential considerations. We remain motivated to thoughtfully attune the physical experience and choreograph the performance of daily life.

Our everyday lives play out in the physical spaces of our homes, our neighborhoods, our cities. In the public realm, we share these spaces with friends, acquaintances, colleagues – and strangers. We celebrate, rejoice, mourn, play, work, and live in commonality with many whom we may never actually meet. Is this strange? Not really. Our social and cultural environments thrive precisely because of the broad and diverse set of viewpoints and individuals. Likewise, our social and cultural environments are a wonderfully messy and rich kaleidoscope, always evolving, dynamic, and challenging. As architects and designers, our work, then, seeks to provide opportunities for meaningful interactions to occur across scale. Our creative acts of design create the platform that allows us to gather, to assemble, to convene – to support the wide crosssection of our social and cultural practices and of the voices of the people living those experiences.
